Frequently Asked Questions

What is a bland diet for dogs?

A bland diet is a specific meal plan that is often recommended by veterinarians to dogs suffering from gastroenteritis (stomach and digestive issues). Because bland diets typically consist of milder ingredients, they are often the ideal way to help "reset" dogs with stomach issues. Oftentimes, a bland diet will consist of simple, low-fat proteins that are boiled and accompanied by a boiled starch/carbohydrate such as rice or sweet potato.

What can I feed my dog on a bland diet?

What foods settle a dog's stomach? Bland diets for dogs will typically consist of one source of lean protein such as chicken, turkey or hamburger and one source of a complex carbohydrate such as rice, sweet potato, or oatmeal. One of the most often recommended recipes by veterinarians is a meal composed of boiled chicken breast and boiled white rice. These meals should not contain any additional flavors or seasonings. Designed to ease an upset stomach and sooth digestive discomfort or diarrhea, bland diets are used to reset a dog's digestive system.

What do dogs do when their stomach hurts?

When dogs have an upset stomach (gastroenteritis), the most obvious indications will be vomiting and diarrhea. Other signs include loss of energy, having a tense or scrunched-up position, stretching the front paws out repeatedly, gas, swollen stomach (this could be an idication of a medical ermergency), gulping or gagging to avoid vomiting, weight loss. During these instances, a bland diet is an ideal way to provide nourishment with soothing ingredients.

What causes stomach aches in dogs?

Like humans, there are many things that can cause stomach aches in dogs and many of them are quite similar. Eating food that has gone bad, changes in diet, or eating specific foods that don't agree with a canines digestive system are all common causes. Additionally, eating something they shouldn't have, such as grass, can cause complications. Also, parasites are often a cause for stomach pain in dogs because of their natural behavior of rooting with their muzzles in the ground. Viruses and bacteria infections are just as common. More severe causes can include kidney or liver failure, stomach ulcers, heat stroke, toxins or poisons, or foreign objects in the intestines. Often not considered but just as possible is emotional stress.

How many cups of bland diet should I feed my dog?

A dog that is on a bland diet should eat an amount that is based on the dog's weight. For dogs weighing less than 20 pounds, we typically recommend 1/4-1/2 cup of our Under the Weather Bland Diet products (cooked) twice daily. For dogs weighing between 20 and 50 pounds, 1/2 to 3/4 cup of cooked meals will suffice. For dogs weighing more than 50 pounds, we recommend 1 cup of cooked food twice daily. These serving sizes may be less than what your dog normally eats but it's important to not overfeed your pet while they get past their digestive issues.

A black dog with a blue collar sits beside a packet of dog food and a bowl.

muddypawsrescuenyc When he first arrived, he was in a bit of rough shape. He was found as a stray, so no one knows exactly what his past was like. All we know is that his future is as bright as his smile! After a few bags of @undertheweatherpet Chicken and Rice (which he gobbled up too fast for us to catch a good photo, yum!), and continuing medication for his stiff joints, Tavo is perking up and has blossomed into the most perfect gentleman.

Amazing results fast! Our Pitty was having a flare up and I decided to try this. He is now holding his leg up sturdy to pee again and has more energy it seems. I can definitely tell this product works! Definitely worth the money! Thank you!

Finally found a powder for my picky eaters! My cats don't like seafood flavored anything. It was a great relief to find this product. They happily eat it mixed with their wet food.

Instagram User Thank you @undertheweatherpet for all the wonderful products! Being a foster/rescue mom 🐾 and having rescued an anxious and picky husky 🐶, I can really appreciate your products!

We have freeze dried bland diet for dogs (a quick food replacement when I’m in a pinch - and SUPER healthy for your dog), hemp calming treats for prone to stress pups, and (I know we don’t want to talk about it, but so needed!) anti-diarrhea to help firm up those loose poops 💩!

Skye definitely is an Under the Weather Pup!

No longer ‘Under the Weather!’ Our 15 year cocker, Peanut, has multiple issues and most foods make her so sick and unhappy. But now she is dancing for dinner again. Also, she gets happy when she sees the kettle boiling as she knows what’s coming! Thank you for making such a good product for fur babies.
