What is a “bland diet”?

“Bland diet” is a term that is used for human diets as well. Wikipedia’s definition is:

“A bland diet is a diet consisting of foods that are generally soft, low in dietary fiber, cooked rather than raw, and not spicy. Fried and fatty foods, strong cheeses, whole grains (rich in fiber), and the medications aspirin and ibuprofen are also avoided while on this diet.”

So in essence, our product provides the protein needed and the low fiber white rice which is filling yet soothing to a dog’s digestive system.

What do you mean by digestive upset?

A dog’s digestive tract can get upset for many reasons, but some common signs are vomiting or diarrhea. Some cases might be mild, others more severe. We always recommend seeing your veterinarian so they can do the necessary exam and tests. Quite often, the first step in the healing process is to calm the digestive tract before the dog is returned to its normal diet.

What should I do if my dog is vomiting or has diarrhea?

The challenge becomes knowing whether your dog has a serious medical issue or if the episode is a passing “blip” on the digestive radar. Our advice to pet parents is not to ignore digestive problems. Dogs are instinctively good at hiding their pain or illness from us, so when they show signs of diarrhea or vomiting, you need to take swift action. It’s very easy for a dog to dehydrate, so time is of the essence!

What's in Under the Weather?

In our first product, Chicken & Rice, we have 100% white meat chicken that is dehydrated mixed with quick cook white rice. That’s it! The chicken comes from a USDA inspected facility, which means it is human grade quality. All ingredients and packaging materials are sourced and assembled in the U.S.A.

Where is it made?

The ingredients and packaging are sourced in the U.S.A. and assembled in Williston, Vermont.

How much should I make and offer?

You mix equal parts of product with hot water. Then, let it stand for 10-15 minutes so it cools before serving. While we’ve developed these guidelines, be sure to always follow your vet’s recommendation.

Small Dogs (<25)

½ cup dried + ½ cup boiling water, twice daily

4 servings/ bag

Medium Dogs (25-50 lbs)

¾ cup dried + ¾ cup boiling water, twice daily

3 servings/ bag

Large Dogs (>50 lbs)

1 cup dried + 1 cup boiling water, twice daily

2 servings/ bag

Do I have to refrigerate after opening?

Yes. While the product lasts a long time unrefrigerated, once the bag is opened, you are introducing moisture which speeds up the deterioration of the meat. The bag comes with a resealable zipper, so just seal it up and pop it into the refrigerator.

My dog LOVES Under the Weather® Chicken & Rice. Why can't I offer it for longer than 2-3 days?

The bland diet serves a purpose – to calm the digestive tract during times of upset. And we can understand your dog loving the product. After all, it’s made from the chicken you would serve the rest of your family. But, dogs need other vitamins and nutrients in their daily diets that are not in our product. Even though your dog perks up at the sight and smell of our product, they would not be getting everything they need on a daily basis.
