GET READY FOR SOME CANINE COUTURE

Let your dog’s fashion flag fly on January 14 – National Dress Up Your Pet Day. Since 2009, pet parents have been celebrating this fun filled, tail-wagging holiday with their pooches and his or her fashionista friends.

Whether your outfit is red carpet worthy or a simple fun scarf, the one ingredient in all these outfits is the love behind each look. Dress up time can be a great bonding experience between you and your precious pooch. They will love getting your undivided attention as you dress them, as well as the positive attention they will get from onlookers.

But remember, don’t just look at the adorable choices in outfits. Make sure the outfit is safe and comfortable for your dog. We can all relate to some latest fashion item we bought, only to find that they hurt our feet or it didn’t fit our body style. You want your dog to be comfortable and proud as a peacock so they can strut their stuff. If they don’t look like they're having fun, it’s probably not the right outfit.

Ways to Celebrate the Holiday

If you don’t already have a dog, or your dog has passed on, consider adopting a dog from a local shelter or dog rescue. There are so many dogs that are looking for a loving forever home.

Dress up your pooch in a safe and comfortable outfit and take pictures. Share them with your friends on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. It will bring a smile to their face and bring them joy to counteract daily stress.

Have a Dress Up Day party with your friends and their dogs. Have some healthy but delicious homemade treats for the dogs and some cute paw print napkins and plates for the human goodies.

Paint up your face as your favorite kind of pet – could be a cat, a dog or a guinea pig. Doesn’t matter, it’s about the fun you will have planning and creating your new costume.

Organize a Pets on Parade in your neighborhood. Contact those around you who also love to spoil their dogs, and set up a time to prance your pooches. Get the kids involved to create fun floats or other pet-related signs.

However you choose to celebrate the day, remember to soak in all the goodness of the bond you share with your dog. Those are truly special moments that will fill your heart.
